The hero section is the first thing users see on your website, but if you’re making these 4 mistakes, you’re missing on big opportunities to turn visitors into clients.
I’ll show you 4 big mistakes on a hero section, that’s this top section right here, and after I show you these mistakes, we’ll fix them using the Website.com site builder, and craft a hero section that gets conversions.
So let’s take a look at this hero section, and this is for a wedding photography website, and it is full of problems that could turn potential clients away right away.
So Mistake One:
Who even are you?
Yes you want to be creative, but don’t lose clarity at the expense of creativity. In a hero section, visitors should be able to know what you are right away.
This text is so vague that visitors will need to scroll to know what the website even offers.
Mistake Two:
You’re mentioning features, but not what makes you better than the rest. You have a very short amount of time to grab visitors and convince them that you’re what they’re looking for, so focusing on your benefits is important to mention.
Mistake Three:
No one knows where you are. If you’re a local business, make sure to mention your location right in the top section, so visitors don’t have to guess.
This will also help you get found in search engines for local search results.
Mistake Four: your call to action button is too vague or generic. “Submit, Click Here, Buy” are not very convincing.
Add some context, some urgency, some humour or positivity can lead to more clicks.
So let’s open up the Website.com site builder where I created this website, and fix this hero section together.
First, the heading. Let’s make it more specific what we actually offer, which is wedding photography, and where we offer it. Bonus points if you can include a couple words that evoke your style. (Emotive and Natural Wedding Photography For London Weddings)
Now, for the supporting copy, we can mention the benefits of our services and point visitors to our call to action. On the left, I’ll toggle on the Subtitle, and add that text in there. (Relaxed, grounded wedding photography that expresses the emotion of your big day. Let me capture your biggest moments with heart and soul.)
Depending on your website needs, you might also want to toggle on the description to add in some more key words to let both users and search engines know exactly who you are and what you offer.
Now the primary call to action is the big action we want users to take. So on this hero, there are 2 buttons, and the primary one is the one on the left.
For the primary button, I would prefer to have a consultation so that both parties can know if they’re a right fit, so I’ll make that button: Book a Free Consultation
If you want to add some urgency or humour, we can change that copy to something like: Snag a Complimentary Heart to Heart Consultation
If you need it, you might want to add a secondary action. This is the next best case scenario, usually something that will turn a reluctant visitor into a loyal fan, at their own pace.
Secondary buttons can be something like See The Demo, get a Free Guide, or some sort of softer offer that could appeal to users who aren’t ready for the primary action.
So there you have it! I’ve now refined this hero section to quickly convey who I am, where I’m located, the benefits that I offer, and includes a compelling primary and secondary call to action.
Of course, you can also change the image on the hero which will make a huge impact on the feel of your website. To do that, just click on the image, and click select from files here to upload your own image or choose a free stock photo.
So that’s it! You can make a great first impression and turn visitors into customers with the right hero content. We hope this was helpful, and don’t forget to subscribe to @websitedotcom for more website tips and tutorials. Thanks for watching!
